Introduction
George Orwell was born in Motihari, India on June 25, 1903 (George Orwell, n.d.). One of his well known novella,"Animal Farm" , published in 1946 is about Totalitarianism in the Soviet Union as well as Stalinism. His satirical novella uses allegorical themes, symbols, language, plot etc. to recount the events during the Russian Revolution. His other famous book, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" talks about the dangers of Totalitarianism and the absolute control it has over people (George Orwell, n.d.). This including psychologically, physically, media, information access and history (SparkNotes Editor, 2007).
Two of the characters in Animal Farm, Old Major and Napoleon resemble Lenin and Stalin. Lenin was the leader of Bolshevik and led them to victory in the 1917, overthrowing Nicholas II. He promoted equality and communism to the peasants, like giving them land and bread. Lenin was also the initial leader of the Soviet Union, even so, his power was ceased within the Soviet Union when he could not write nor speak. The rise of Stalin began and he exiled and switched all the people who is a threat to him to eliminate his opponents. With full support of his own people after regrouping and rearranging the structure of the "old" party, Stalin became a totalitarian. His arbitrary despotism policies and brutal slaughter killed millions, and other tens of millions were ensuing lethal from famine. (SparkNotes Editor, 2007)
Dictatorship and the usage of Propaganda was displayed throughout Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution to promote dictatorship and manipulate people. Dictatorship from Napoleon(Stalin) illustrates how dictatorship and propaganda together can be used to gain acceptance and access to anything wanted. The Dictatorship of Napoleon portrays his change from going against humans, to going against its own kind. The words "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" contradicts each other, implying that equality is not equal. The use of rhetorical language distorts the meaning of equality in Animal Farm. (Orwell, 1946)
