At the beginning of the story, the animal's objective was to destroy and wipe out humans so that they can rule Animal Farm. After a "threat" is eliminated, the pigs stepped up to be the leaders because they were the "brainy" ones. This forms the start of a cycle of a new dictatorship. It is evident that Napoleon was the dictator of Animal Farm throughout the novella. Napoleon(Stalin) moves in and decides to eliminate all threats to him that will impede him from being the next ruler. Snowball(Trotsky) was exiled from the farm because of Napoleon's denunciation and he succeeded in becoming the dictator. (Animal Farm, n.d.) Next was the reign of terror where all the opposers were to be exiled or executed so that he will be assured that every animal will support Napoleon and no secret organisations will be made to overthrow him one day. Of course, he needs loyal followers which will obey and protect him -- the dogs. Napoleon became a totalitarian and began to set up new plans. He could not change the Seven Commandments because it will not satisfy the other animals, only altering will work. As he consolidated, Squealer became his right and left hand man, justifying all his deeds and getting more support from other animals. Napoleon began to sleep on beds, drink alcohol and made trades with humans. From here, it is easy to visualise the changes from the ideal to live in Animalism to making more connection with Humanism. Napoleon cared less about the animals and only cared about earning money through agriculture and trading for his own whisky. (Animal Farm, n.d.) The animals have only enough for them to survive. As years pass on Animal Farm, Napoleon and the pigs become more and more like humans, holding whips, wearing clothes and walking upright. They ceased the Seven Commandments and carved the words, "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" (Orwell, 1946). The word equal was already distorted and was used as a tool to manipulate the animals of what equality meant. The words "more equal" is contradictory, illustrating a concept the the animals are oppressing their own kind. "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."(Orwell, 1946). From the way the pigs were socialising with humans, discussing about the labouring classes of both animals and human, it was already a flip to what the initial idea of Animalism really was. Napoleon also changed Animal Farm back to Manor Farm, claiming to be the correct one. The animals feel that there is no difference between pigs and humans anymore and does not know which one to fear, because all the actions of the pigs claim to be human (Animal Farm, n.d.).
The Dictatorship of Napoleon and the pigs reflects on the dictatorship of Stalin and the corruption of the socialist ideals. From this novella, it portrays Stalin and the Soviet Union as violence against humans philosophy, language and ideals -- humanism (SparkNotes Editors, 2007).
